Veteran Indian wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik shared his thoughts on the future captain of India’s team after Rohit Sharma departed. The wicket-keeper has given his opinion on whether star Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah should be appointed as Indian captain or not.
Bumrah has previously captained the team in both Tests and T20Is, starting with the one-off Test against England in 2022. He later led India to a 2-0 series win against Ireland after returning from a long injury break.
Many believe that Bumrah could be a strong candidate for the long-term captaincy of the Indian team. However, speaking on Cricbuzz, Karthik suggested that the main concern for the selectors would be ensuring Bumrah’s consistent fitness across all formats. However, the former Indian wicketkeeper acknowledged that Bumrah possesses the qualities needed to be an excellent captain.
“Everything is right. He is calm, cool, good maturity, but he is a fast bowler, so how can we play him in all three formats? That is the biggest question the selectors would have had,” said Karthik.
Karthik believes that Bumrah’s fitness should be carefully monitored because he is a fast bowler. He should be protected and only made to play in important matches.
“For a fast bowler like Bumrah, his fitness needs to be monitored and he needs to be protected as a player and only made to play in important matches, I keep saying this about Bumrah, he is like a Kohinoor diamond, we got to protect him, take care of him, make sure that he lasts as long as possible because whenever Bumrah plays in any format he makes an impact and that’s what we want,” said Karthik.
