ENG vs SL 2024: Sri Lanka Beat England For The 1st Time In 40 Years, Nissanka Fires With Bat

In the third test match between England and Sri Lanka, the visitors beat the hosts by eight wickets. In the history of cricket, it is just the fourth Test win for Sri Lanka on England soil in the last 40 years.

Pathum Nissanka unbeaten 127 guided Sri Lanka to victory, marking their first Test win against England since 2014.

Sri Lanka started the day at 94 for 1 and needed 125 more runs to win. They completed the chase in just over two hours, finishing at 219-2 to secure an eight-wicket victory. Kusal Mendis added nine runs to his overnight score of 30 before being caught by Shoaib Bashir off Gus Atkinson’s bowling.

Nissanka had hit a fast 53* on Sunday to set up the chase, played more cautiously at first but kept scoring steadily. He reached his second Test century in 107 balls. Angelo Mathews, calm and experienced, added 32* as Sri Lanka comfortably won. Nissanka’s unbeaten 127 is the highest score by a Sri Lankan in the fourth innings of a Test since Kusal Perera’s famous 153* in South Africa in 2019.

Sri Lanka secured their fourth win in England in 40 years, thanks to an excellent bowling effort on Sunday when they bowled England out for 156 in just 34 overs. This was their first Test win over England since 2014.

Despite England being 221 for 3 at the end of day one, they lost their advantage. Much of the credit goes to Sri Lanka for their disciplined second-inning bowling and their calmness while chasing 219 runs.
