ON THIS DAY: Sachin Tendulkar Smashed His Maiden ODI Hundred, A Look Back at The Explosive Inning

Today In Cricket, Sportsin24x7.com will throw the light on the very first hundred of the legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar.

On September 9, 1994, after 76 ODI innings, Sachin Tendulkar registered his first century. He made 110 runs from 130 balls against Australia in the 3rd match of the Singer World Series played in Colombo. Tendulkar had a rough start in ODI cricket and he got out for ducks in his first two games. He finally scored his first runs in a match against New Zealand in March 1990.

Despite his success in Test cricket, Sachin Tendulkar had a tough time in ODIs at first. He scored 1,758 runs in his first 66 innings, with an average of 30.84 and a strike rate of 74.36 where he got 13 half-centuries. His career took a big turn when he started opening the batting for the first time against New Zealand on March 27, 1994.

The right-handed batter stunned the world on his maiden outing as an opener scoring a breathtaking 82 (49) with the help of 15 fours and two sixes. Having tasted success as an opener, there was no looking back for the batting stalwart as he registered scores of 82, 63, 40, 63, and 73 in his first five innings while batting at the top order.

In his tenth innings, Sachin Tendulkar finally scored his first century that too against the mighty Australia. After captain Mohammad Azharuddin won the toss and chose to bat first, Tendulkar attacked the Australian bowlers from the start and reached his half-century in just 43 balls.

Tendulkar then completed his first of 49 ODI centuries. He hit eight fours and two sixes, marking the beginning of his dominance in the 50-over game. India won the match by 31 runs, and Tendulkar was named Player of the Match.
