Gujarat Titans Wicket Keeper Retires From International Cricket, Leaves An Emotional Message

Australian wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday, October 29. The 36-year-old was a key player in Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup win and last played for the national team in the T20 World Cup 2024, in a Super 8 match against India at Gros Islet on June 24, 2024.

While playing for Australia he has served the team in 36 Tests, 97 ODIs, and 92 T20Is.

Over his 13-year international career, Wade played many important innings for Australia in all three formats, scoring 1,613 runs in Tests, 1,867 in ODIs, and 1,202 in T20Is. He also captained the T20I team a few times. While retired from international cricket, Wade will still play white-ball cricket for Tasmania, the Hobart Hurricanes, and overseas leagues.

After announcing his retirement, Wade will immediately step into a coaching role with the Australian national team. He will be Australia’s wicketkeeping and fielding coach for the T20 series against Pakistan next month. Australia and Pakistan will play three T20Is in Brisbane, Sydney, and Hobart on November 14, 16, and 18.

Matthew Wade Statement After Retirement

“I’m officially retiring,” Wade was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au. on Tuesday. “It’s been an ongoing discussion for pretty much every tour or every World Cup that I’ve been on in the last three or four years.”

“It’s been a really fluent conversation that I’ve had with George (Bailey, chief selector) and Ronnie (coach Andrew McDonald) over the last six months or since the last World Cup finished.”

“Even leading into the last World Cup, we’ve been really open and had really great communication around where I’m at with my career. If we went into the last World Cup and I managed to get some runs and we won that, then things would look maybe a little different, and maybe I’d keep going… It was just kind of an understanding from all of us.”

Wade has also played in IPL in 2022 and 2024 for Gujarat Titans in which he has scored 157 and 4 runs respectively.
