David Warner Wants To Comeback From Retirement, This Is What Pat Cummins Replied

Australia’s captain Pat Cummins has said that David Warner will not return for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) against India. Cummins confirmed that Warner will not be part of the five-match Test series against Rohit Sharma’s team at home later this year.

Now, Australia needs to find a new opening partner for Usman Khawaja for the Test series. There are several players being considered for that spot. David Warner sparked some talk by saying he might come back to the Test team, even though he had retired from international cricket.

David Warner Retirement

Warner played his last Test match against Pakistan in Sydney earlier this year. He retired from international cricket after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. After Warner’s retirement, Steve Smith opened for Australia in Test matches, but that decision didn’t go well.

Recently, David Warner surprised everyone by saying he is ready to return to the Australian team for the series against India. He stated that he would be willing to play in the next Shield game if needed.

While talking to Code Sports, the left-handed batter said, “I’m always available, just got to pick up the phone.”

“I’m always dead serious. Let’s be honest, the guys have played one red-ball game since their last Test matches in February, so I’ve almost had the same preparation. Honestly, if they really needed myself for this series, I’m more than happy to play the next Shield game and go out there and play,” he added.

Pat Cummins spoke to the Grade Cricketer and jokingly reacted to David Warner’s offer to come back. Cummins wished Warner good luck in his new job with the Sydney Thunder for the upcoming BBL season. He said that Warner’s offer seems like a joke and confirmed that he is officially retired.

“Dave, we’re very interested. We’re taking it very seriously and we’ll be in touch, mate,” Pat Cummins said on the podcast.

“I did speak to Dave a couple of days ago. I can’t remember if he reached out or I did… he’s like, “What do you think?”, and I was like, “Yeah, good luck with [Sydney] Thunder and I look forward to your comments on Fox,” he said.

“I think the truth’s somewhere in the middle. I reckon it (offer) is a bit of a wind-up but I reckon he doesn’t mind seeing himself in the back page. We love Davey but he is retired,” Pat Cummins added.

The five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy will start on November 22 in Perth. The second Test will take place in Adelaide on December 6, and the other matches will be held in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.
