Young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal delivered an outstanding performance on Day 3 of the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at Perth Stadium and created history. Jaiswal became the third Indian batter to score a century on debut in a Test match on Australian soil.
Yashasvi Jaiswal Joins The Elite List Of Sunil Gavaskar
With his hundred, he joined the elite list of legendary Indian batters like Sunil Gavaskar who scored a century in their first Test in Australia. The first Indian to achieve this feat was Motganhalli Jaisimha, who scored 101 runs during the Brisbane Test on the 1967-68 tour.
Jaiswal completed his century in a stylish way where he hit a six off Josh Hazlewood. He played an uppercut in the 62nd over of the innings to reach the three-figure mark. The left-handed batter took 205 balls to achieve this milestone.
This is Jaiswal’s fourth Test century. His first Test century came on debut against the West Indies. Earlier this year, he scored double centuries in two consecutive Tests against Ben Stokes-led England. The left-handed batter crossed the 100-run mark in red-ball cricket after nine months.
Jaiswal is the second Indian to score a Test century at Optus Stadium in Perth. The first was Virat Kohli, who made 123 runs in 2018, though India lost that game. Jaiswal is also the third visiting player to hit a Test century at this ground. Earlier this year, Kraigg Brathwaite from the West Indies achieved this milestone.
Jaiswal Joins The List Of Elite Batters
Jaiswal has become the fifth Indian batter to score four or more Test centuries before turning 23. Sachin Tendulkar holds the record with eight centuries, followed by Ravi Shastri (5), Sunil Gavaskar (4), and Vinod Kambli (4). Jaiswal has also equalled Tendulkar and Shastri by scoring three Test centuries in a calendar year before turning 23. Only Kambli and Gavaskar are ahead, having scored four Test centuries in a calendar year.
