Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Internet Fumes As KL Rahul Returns To Pavilion After Controversial Decision

The first Test between India and Australia grabbed attention after KL Rahul was sent back to the pavilion due to a wrong decision. During the first session of the opening Test in the Border-Gavaskar Series between India and Australia, a controversial DRS decision led to KL Rahul being given out and leaving the field.

The Controversial Dismissal Of KL Rahul

The incident happened when KL Rahul was batting on 26 runs from 74 balls, and India had already lost three wickets. Facing Mitchell Starc, Rahul appeared to edge the ball behind to Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey. However, the on-field umpire did not give him out. Australia then decided to use the review system.

In the video, there was a clear gap between the bat and the ball as it passed the bat. However, in the next frame, the gap looked smaller, and the snicko meter showed a spike. The third umpire found the replay clear enough to change the on-field umpire’s decision.

Rahul was upset and argued with the on-field umpire after being given out. Replays suggested that the spike on the snicko meter might have been caused by the bat hitting the pad, not the ball. However, the third umpire didn’t use a frame showing both the ball passing the bat and the bat hitting the pad at the same time.

Former cricketers and experts criticized the third umpire’s decision.

Match Summary of India vs Australia, 1st Test

In this match, Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah won the toss and elected to bat first. The decision did not go in the favour of India and they lost Yashasvi Jaiswal, who returned to pavilion on duck. KL Rahul showed some intent but was sent back after the controversial decision.

Senior batter Virat Kohli could only manage five runs in 12 balls and was sent back to the pavilion. Till this news, India has reached 100 runs with Rishabh Pant and Nitish Reddy on the crease.
