On Saturday, September 28, the IPL governing council announced the eagerly awaited retention guidelines for the 2025 season. These rules specify how many players each team can retain, the total budget for the teams, and the rules regarding overseas players, along with other important details.

Each team can retain a maximum of six players, including 5 capped players and 1 uncapped player. While the auction will take place later this year, the franchises must finalize their list of retained players by a given deadline.

The final date for the 10 IPL franchises to submit their lists of direct retentions is October 31, 2024, by 5:00 PM IST.

Teams have the flexibility to choose the number of players they wish to retain, but they cannot retain more than six players, with one of them being an uncapped player.

After submitting the list of retained players, the auction is expected to be held in the third or fourth week of November, according to Cricbuzz, with the venue likely being in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, the official announcement regarding the auction date is still awaited.

The IPL governing council has already announced that all the franchises can retain up to six players which includes one use of the Right to Match card as well.
