ENG vs AUS, 5th ODI – Match Report
Australia won by 49 runs against England in an exciting match, decided by the DLS (Duckworth-Lewis-Stern) method after rain interrupted play in the second innings. The game took place at the Country Ground in Bristol.
England, after being asked to bat first, had a mixed innings, starting strong but ending poorly. Phil Salt and Ben Duckett gave England a quick start, but Salt was dismissed in the 7th over, caught by Marnus Labuschagne off Aaron Hardie’s bowling after scoring 45 runs from just 27 balls. Chasing 310, Australia’s openers started confidently. Travis Head and Matthew Short batted aggressively, putting pressure on the English bowlers. Matthew Short, on the other hand, was in great form. He played a fantastic knock, scoring 58 from just 30 balls, with 7 boundaries and 4 sixes at a strike rate of 193.33. His aggressive batting kept Australia ahead of the required run rate. He was eventually dismissed in the 13th over, caught by Jamie Smith off Matthew Potts’ bowling. By that time, Australia had reached 118-2 and were in a strong position.
Captain Steven Smith and wicketkeeper Josh Inglis then took control, guiding Australia closer to the target. Smith played a steady innings of 36 from 48 balls, while Inglis was more attacking, scoring 28 from 20 balls, with four boundaries. As the rain began to fall, Australia was well ahead of the DLS par score. The match was stopped after 20.4 overs, and Australia was declared the winner by 49 runs.
England’s bowlers struggled to contain the Australian batsmen. Matthew Potts was the most expensive, conceding 49 runs from 7 overs, though he did manage to take Short’s wicket. Brydon Carse took 1-36 from 5 overs, while Will Jacks and Adil Rashid were expensive, with economy rates of 20.00 and 4.10, respectively.
With this win, the series between ENG vs AUS went into the favour of the visitors where they clinch it by 3-2.
In the end, Australia’s all-round performance, with both the bat and ball, proved decisive in this high-scoring match.
