What is Right To Match Card or RTM rule in IPL?

The mega auction is set for 2025, following two smaller auctions in 2023 and 2024. Mega auctions usually lead to more team changes, unlike mini auctions, which focus on maintaining stability with few exceptions. The last big auction happened before IPL 2022 when two new teams were added.

During mega auctions, teams can retain players in two ways – through direct retention or by using Right to Match (RTM) cards. All players not retained by their franchises before the mega auction will enter the auction pool. However, franchises can still use RTM cards to reclaim select players of their choice.

What is the Right To Match(RTM) Card or RTM Rule in IPL?

All players not retained by their franchises before the mega auction will enter the auction pool. However, franchises can still use RTM cards to reclaim select players of their choice.

If Mumbai Indians (MI) decide not to retain Rohit Sharma ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, he will be available for bidding. Suppose Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bids INR 15 Crores for Rohit. In that case, MI can use the Right to Match (RTM) card to match CSK’s bid of INR 15 Crores and bring Rohit back into their squad, if they choose to exercise this option.
