History Of IPL And How Many Teams Have Played Till Date?

The Indian Premier League is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated sporting events in the world. When it began in 2008, no one could have predicted that it would grow to dominate world cricket. Over the years, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced several exciting initiatives that have made it famous worldwide.

On September 13, 2007, after India won the 2007 T20 World Cup, the BCCI announced the launch of a new Twenty20 cricket league called the Indian Premier League. The first season was set to begin in April 2008.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) was launched by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2008. Lalit Modi, who was the Vice President of the BCCI at the time, was the key person behind starting the league.

DLF was the prime sponsor of IPL in 2008 when eight teams participated in the tournament. The league introduced city-based franchises, drawing top global players and rapidly gaining fame. The inaugural season was clinched by the Rajasthan Royals where they beat Chennai Super Kings in the final.

Since its inception, IPL has evolved into one of the most-watched and financially rewarding cricket leagues worldwide, renowned for its star-studded roster, substantial budgets, and dazzling opening ceremonies. It has also emerged as a crucial platform for young Indian talent to shine on the international stage.

What Makes IPL Special?

IPL is the only such cricket platform where we see all the top star cricketers of the world, locking their horns with the domestic talents. The combination of seven Indian players and four foreigners generates a kind of sheer competition among the teams.
One of the major highlights of IPL is its Auction. Every year there is a mini-auction that goes for a single day, and every three years the mega auction happens.

Benefits To Domestic Players

Many big players representing Team India today have evolved from the IPL. Players like Ravindra Jadeja, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya have gained huge appreciation at the international level because of their impressive performances at this cash-rich league.
