Why Does Afghanistan Cricket Team Play Its ‘Home Matches In India’?

Afghanistan is set to host Bangladesh for a white-ball series in Greater Noida this July and August. This series marks Afghanistan’s first ‘home’ match in India in four years.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has allowed Afghanistan to use Indian venues for their home games. This decision came after Afghanistan’s efforts to keep playing international cricket, despite the country being under pressure from Taliban rule.

Afghanistan will make the Shahid Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida their home ground once again. This venue was last used in March 2020 and now they will host a series against Bangladesh which includes three ODIs and three T20Is, scheduled from July 25 to August 6.

The BCCI has designated two home venues for Afghanistan which are Greater Noida and Kanpur. This arrangement stems from a memorandum of understanding signed between the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) and the BCCI in December 2015. According to it, Afghanistan has permission to use the Shahid Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex as their home ground. Afghanistan has also hosted their ‘home’ matches in Dehradun, the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, and Greater Noida
