The form of two Indian star batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli is a big concern for the Indian cricket management before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, starting on November 22. Both players struggled in their recent series against New Zealand and scored only 91 and 93 runs in six innings. This has made the management question their future in Test cricket.
Former Australian cricketer Michael Hussey, however, is not worried about their form. He believes they will find their rhythm again soon. Hussey said it’s unfair to call such legendary players ‘finished’ and called it silly for experts to doubt them. He is confident that both Rohit and Kohli can make a strong comeback in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar trophy.
“We’ve seen it so many times to ride off champion players..pundits come out and say that Rohit Sharma is finished and Virat Kohli is no good anymore. I mean, that’s just ridiculous. They’re legends, legendary players. They’re proud players. If you write them off, you’re just going to end up having egg on your face, because they will perform well again. They’re too good not to. I think it’s silly to write them off and write off the Indian team as well. It’s just not in my vocabulary,” Hussey told The Times of India.
After the retirement of David Warner, Steve Smith moved up to open the batting, but the strategy didn’t work out as planned, as Smith struggled to perform. In the series against India, Smith will return to his usual number four spot, with Nathan McSweeney taking over as an opener. Despite these changes, Michael Hussey felt the team looked balanced and believed they would be well-prepared for the exciting series ahead.
“I think the team is pretty settled… There was a lot of talk in Australia about who was going to open the batting and it seems like they’ve settled on Nathan McSweeney to do that role. So I’m pretty sure that the Australian team is settled. They’ll just go about their preparation and be ready to go for Friday,” Hussey concluded.
