The star all-rounder of Afghanistan cricket Mohammad Nabi will announce his retirement from ODI cricket after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The chief executive of the Afghanistan Cricket Board, Naseeb Khan confirmed this news to Cricbuzz.
The chief executive of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) shared that the former captain has told board officials about his decision to retire. However, Naseeb also said that the experienced player will likely keep playing T20Is for Afghanistan.
While talking to Cricbuzz, Naseeb said, “Yes, Nabi is retiring from ODIs after the Champions Trophy and he informed the board about his desire.”
“He told me a few months back that he wants to end his ODI career after the Champions Trophy and we welcome his decision. After the Champions Trophy, what I understand is that he is expected to continue his T20 career, and that is the plan until now,” he added.
Nabi is one of the most experienced players on the Afghan team. He has played 165 ODIs, three Tests, and 129 T20Is for Afghanistan. In ODIs, he has scored 3,549 runs at an average of 27.30, with two centuries and 17 half-centuries. He has also taken 171 ODI wickets, with four times taking four wickets in a match and once taking five.
The 39-year-old Nabi continues to be a key player for Afghanistan in ODIs, as he showed in the first game of the three-match series against Bangladesh on Wednesday. Afghanistan was struggling at 71/5, but Nabi stepped up and boosted the team’s score to a competitive level.
He scored 84 runs at a strike rate of 106.32, shifting the pressure back onto Bangladesh. Additionally, Nabi took the key wicket of Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto.
