The BCCI secretary Jay Shah was elected as the new chairman of the ICC on Tuesday, August 27, with no competitors. At the age of 35, Shah will become the youngest ever to lead the ICC, having submitted his nomination right before the deadline.
Jay Shah will take over from Greg Barclay, who decided not to run for a third term after starting his tenure in 2020. Shah’s term as the ICC chair will officially begin on December 1, 2024.
Earlier this month, the ICC announced that there would only be an election for the chairman position if more than one person was nominated. However, on Tuesday Jay Shah was confirmed for the role.
It is still unclear who will take over as BCCI secretary when Shah leaves the position at the end of November.
“Jay Shah has been elected unopposed as the next Independent Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shah, who has served as the BCCI Honorary Secretary since October 2019 and Chair of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021, will assume this prestigious role on December 1, 2024. Shah was the sole nominee for the chairmanship after current Chair Greg Barclay decided not to seek a third term,” the ICC said in a statement.
