Who is Vaibhav Suryavanshi? 13-year old cricketer who joins Rajasthan Royals for IPL 2025

Vaibhav Suryavanshi from Bihar, a left-handed top-order batsman, became the youngest player to earn an IPL contract. The 13-year-old was bought by Rajasthan Royals (RR) for Rs. 1.10 crore during the IPL 2025 auction.

The bidding started at his base price of Rs. 30 lakh, and after fierce competition between Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals, RR eventually secured this talented young player for the upcoming IPL edition.

“Vaibhav trained at our high-performance centre in Nagpur, and he truly impressed our coaching staff,” said RR CEO Jake Lush McCrum.

“He’s an exceptional talent with immense potential. While he’ll need to continue working hard to adapt to the IPL level, we are thrilled to welcome him to our franchise.”

Who Is Vaibhav Suryavanshi?

Vaibhav hails from Samastipur, a small city located about 100 kilometers northeast of Patna. Suryavanshi has already showcased his talent in domestic cricket. His cricketing journey began at the age of four when his father, Sanjeev, a farmer, noticed his passion for the game. Despite limited resources, Sanjeev created a small practice area in their backyard to nurture his son. At the age of nine, Suryavanshi joined a cricket academy and quickly rose through the ranks of Bihar cricket.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s Rise To Fame

At only 12 years old, Vaibhav Suryavanshi impressed everyone in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy where he scored 400 runs in five matches. A few months later, he was chosen for the India B U-19 team for the quadrangular series in Andhra Pradesh in November 2023.

He also got a place in the India A U-19 team for matches against Bangladesh and England and was considered for the ICC U-19 World Cup 2024 trials. However, he was not selected for the final team after a poor performance in the trials.

Suryavanshi performed well at Bihar’s U-23 selection camp after which he was selected in the state’s Ranji Trophy team. In January 2024, he made his first-class debut in an Elite Group B match against Mumbai in Patna, becoming the fourth-youngest player to debut in first-class cricket.

After his debut against Mumbai, he has played five Ranji Trophy matches and is now playing for Bihar in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He also made his T20 debut against Rajasthan on November 23.

Suryavanshi came into the limelight when he scored a quick century against Australia U-19. There he scored 104 runs off just 58 balls. At 13 years and 187 days old, he became the youngest player to score a century in youth cricket, breaking the record held by Bangladesh’s captain Najmul Hossain Shanto.
