IPL 2025 has almost six months to go now but franchises will start their preparation right from the auction which is going to happen in the last week of November. In IPL 2024, many teams suffered due to their poor captaincy and their decision-making hampered their position in the IPL points table. In this article, we will analyze and talk about five such teams who will look to change their captain in IPL 2025.
Punjab Kings(PBKS)
The Punjab Kings have been looking for a stable captain. Since Shikhar Dhawan was captain, people are talking about finding a more energetic leader. If Rohit Sharma leaves the Mumbai Indians, he could be a good choice for PBKS because he would offer strong leadership and great batting skills. Dhawan has been captain for 17 matches in which Punjab Kings has only won six matches and they have faced loss in 11 out of them. During the IPL 2024, fans also got a hint of some conflict between the Dhawan and Punjab franchise where the batter was seen warming the bench for the whole season.
Lucknow Super Giants(LSG)
KL Rahul’s time with LSG has had many highs and lows, making some people think it’s time for a change. If Rahul goes to Royal Challengers Bangalore, LSG might look to get Suryakumar Yadav, who is recognized for his good batting and leadership skills, especially if he can be traded or bought in an auction. However, the performance of KL Rahul as the captain of LSG has not been that bad, he has been the skipper of the side for 37 matches where they have won 20 and lost 17 games.
Roya Challengers Bangalore(RCB)
RCB, known for their strong batting, might change their captain since Faf du Plessis is getting close to retiring. However, under the captaincy of Faf, the team has performed decently. KL Rahul with his experience and connections to Karnataka cricket, could be a good choice to bring leadership and stability to a team that wants to win, especially seeing his skills for Lucknow Super Giants. Faf has captained RCB for 42 matches where he has won 21 and lost 21 games. In the widest spectrum, RCB can once again go with Virat Kohli as the captain of the side.
Kolkata Knight Riders(KKR)
Although KKR lifted the IPL trophy for the third time in IPL, that too in the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, fans often give credit to head coach Gautam Gambhir for this win. KKR beat SRH in the final to secure the trophy after 2012 and 2014 but it seems the franchise might look to move on from Shreyas Iyer as captain. Former Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has been already announced as the bowling coach of the team and the team will look to keep a more progressive approach in the next season.
Gujarat Titans(GT)
Gujarat Titans did exceptionally well in the first two seasons of the Indian Premier League, where they came as the winner in the first season and reached the final in the second one. After Hardik left the captaincy of the side, Shubman Gill was appointed as the captain for IPL 2024. Under his captaincy, Gujarat Titans played 12 matches in which the team won five and lost seven games. It is very clear that Gill needs more time to establish himself as captain and currently, he should focus on his batting only. If GT retains Rashid Khan, he could be one option for the Gujarat franchise. In IPL 2024 as well, in the absence of Shhubman Gill, the leg-spinner was seen as the captain where they won one game and lost the same number of game.
