In the first Test match between India and New Zealand, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma had a tense conversation with on-field umpire Michael Gough on Day 4 of the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru.
This happened when the umpires stopped play due to bad light, which frustrated the Indian team as they were eager to take early wickets in New Zealand’s chase of a small target of 107 runs.
As thick clouds covered the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and visibility worsened, even with the floodlights on, the umpires decided it wasn’t safe to continue playing.
Rohit Sharma spoke to umpire Michael Gough and asked him to reconsider since India wanted to keep their momentum. Virat Kohli also joined and tried to talk to the umpires to let the game go on. However, after checking the light meter, the umpires stuck to their decision and stopped the game for the day.
Team India wanted to take advantage of the conditions and put early pressure on New Zealand’s batters. Their momentum was already disrupted when rain clouds appeared, causing the ground crew to cover the pitch, expecting more delays.
Earlier in the day, the Indian middle-order came with a strong intent after collapsing for only 46 runs in the first innings. Sarfaraz Khan scored an impressive 150, and Rishabh Pant added a strong 99, giving India a good opportunity to set a tough target.
