Indian Premier League, widely known as IPL is a T20 league started in India by the BCCI. The league includes ten teams, each representing a city or state. The IPL is the most popular and biggest cricket league in the world. It usually takes place over two months, from March to May, during the summer. Since the IPL attracts a huge fanbase worldwide, very few international cricket matches happen during that time.
In this article, we will look at all the IPL teams that have participated in this prestigious T20 league so far.
1. Chennai Super Kings(CSK) – Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is one of the most successful teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Founded in 2008, CSK is known for its consistent performance, winning the IPL title five times (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023). The team was led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni and now by Ruturaj Gaikwad. They have a strong fan base known as the “Whistle Podu Army.” CSK’s home ground is the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, also called Chepauk.
2. Mumbai Indians(MI) – The Mumbai-based franchise, Mumbai Indians(MI) is owned by Mukesh Ambani and they are the most successful teams in the history of the IPL along with Chennai Super Kings. The team has won the IPL for five times, all under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. At current, Hardik Pandya is the skipper of the team. Rohit Sharm and his team lifted the IPL for the first time in 2013 defeating Chennai Super Kings.
3. Kolkata Knight Riders(KKR) – Kolkata Knight Riders has won the IPL three times, two under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir and the third one, recently with Shreyas Iyer in 2024. Kolkata first won their trophy by beating Chennai Super Kings in 2012 and then in 2014 defeating Kings XI Punjab(now Punjab Kings). In 2024 they beat Sunrisers Hyderabad to win the prestigious T20 league.
4. Sunrisers Hyderabad – Sunrisers Hyderabad(SRH) has been one of the most competitive sides. Under the captaincy of David Warner, they won the trophy by beating Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final. They entered the final for the second time in 2018 where they faced a defeat against Chennai Super Kings. In 2024, under the captaincy of Pat Cummins, they faced a final loss against KKR.
5. Rajasthan Royals – Rajasthan Royals(RR) are inaugural champion of the Indian Premier League in 2008. They won the tournament by defeating Chennai Super Kings under the captaincy of the late legendary Shane Warne. In 2022, they have been the runner-up of the tournament.
6. Gujarat Titans – Gujarat Titans was formed in 2022 and in their very first won the Indian Premier League under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya.
7. Decan Chargers – Decan Chargers won the IPL under the captaincy of Adam Gilchrist in 2009.
8. Royal Challengers Bangalore – Royal Challengers Bangalore(RCB) has not won IPL for any single time. However, they have been into the final of the tournament three times, in 2009, 2011, and 2016.
9. Delhi Capitals – Delhi Capitals (DC) have been into the final for only a single time in 2020 where they lost against Mumbai Indians.
10. Punjab Kings – Punjab Kings (PBKS) have been into the final in year 2014 where they lost against Kolkata Knight Riders.
11. Rising Pune Supergiant – Rising Pune Supergiant has been in the final in 2017 under the captaincy of Steve Smith, where they lost to Mumbai Indians.
12. Lucknow Supergiants – Lucknow Supergiant has played three seasons where they performed decently. They made it into the playoffs 2 times and in 2024 they finished in seventh position in the points table.
13. Kochi Tuskers Kerala – Finished at 8th position in the 2011 IPL.
14. Gujarat Lions – Entered into playoffs in 2016 and finished 7th in 2017.
15. Pune Warriors India – They have finished in 9th position 2 times in 2011, and 2012 and 8th position one time that is in 2013.
