Exclusive: Shakib Al Hasan confirms his Test and T20 retirement

Bangladesh’s experienced all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has announced that he is retiring from T20 internationals. He also mentioned that the upcoming Test match against India in Kanpur might be his final game in red-ball cricket.

He made this announcement during a press conference before the second Test between India and Bangladesh.

Shakib shared that he wishes to retire from Test cricket in front of his home fans in Mirpur. However, if that doesn’t happen, the match against India will be his last appearance in Test cricket.

“I have expressed my desire to play my last Test in Mirpur, if that won’t happen, the second Test against India would be my last,” Shakib said, as quoted by PTI.

Shakib Al Hasan further added, “Bangladesh cricket has given me so much, and I want to give my last in this format at home.”

Shakib Al Hasan made his Test debut against India as well. His first appearance in red-ball cricket for Bangladesh was in Chattogram in May 2007, and he has since played 70 Test matches for his country.

Shakib had previously suggested during the T20 World Cup that he might have already played his final T20I for Bangladesh and he officially confirmed his retirement from the format during the press conference. Over his career, Shakib represented Bangladesh in 129 T20I matches, scoring 2,551 runs with a strike rate of 121.18.
